3 great ads I had nothing to do with – #71 with Leo Burnett’s Gareth Butters

Gareth Butters, creative director at Leo Burnett, shares three great ads he admires but had nothing to do with.

Butters is creative director at Leo Burnett, which he joined in 2016. He’s worked across the agency's clients including Skoda and Butlin's and most noticeably penned last year’s "Raise your arches" campaign for McDonald’s and "Oven Gloves" for Morrisons.

Before that, Butters worked across a host of London agencies including Saatchi & Saatchi, Grey, AnalogFolk and TMS.

Butters’ picks

1. Weedol Pathclear “I'm Weeding Right Now” (2015)

This TV ad from Weedol Pathclear aims to elevate the brand's presence as the gardening season begins. The spot vividly showcases how Weedol Pathclear effectively prevents weed growth for up to three months. In the spotlight is a man who humorously conveys his ongoing battle against weeds while engaging in a range of unexpected activities, from table tennis to painting a masterpiece. And even giving a spray tan to a Russian bodybuilder.

2. Carling Black Label “Cowboy” (1986)

The ad unfolds in a classic Western saloon where a quiet character fails to order a drink, leading to his swift exit, pursued by horse-riding bandits. Just when we think the ad has finished, it continues seamlessly into subsequent commercials, including one for a love songs album collection and another for laundry powder, each featuring the character being chased through the middle of the ads. We end up in the pub where our hero - finally- gets his Carling Black Label.

3. Currys PC World “Jigsaw” (2015)

In 2015, Currys PC World launched its inaugural Christmas campaign in collaboration with AMV BBDO and featuring legendary actor Jeff Goldblum. The ads aimed to illustrate that Christmas doesn't always meet our idealised expectations, and, occasionally, we need to put on a bit of an act to maintain the festive spirit. The campaign positioned Currys PC World as the solution, suggesting that, with the right electrical products, there's no need for any pretence at Christmas.
